| How healthcare is paid for | Public healthcare is organised by the 21 wellbeing services counties (hyvinvointialue) and funded from tax revenue, not patient payments; anyone with a municipality of residence (kotikunta) in Finland is entitled to use it and pays only capped client fees, while private care costs the patient considerably more. | IVF cycles the state covers | Publicly funded fertility treatment is available on referral, but Finland publishes no fixed national number of funded cycles — the amount of treatment is decided case by case. HUS (Helsinki University Hospital) states the referral criteria: the couple must have been actively trying to conceive for at least 12 months and already have no more than one child together (a single woman or a female couple may already have one child), BMI between 18 and 35, no drug or alcohol abuse, nicotine products discontinued, and the probability of childbirth must be more than 10% per treatment cycle. Waiting time for IVF is 4-6 months. Kela separately reimburses part of private fertility treatment where infertility is caused by illness. (Vuosilomalaki 162/2005) |
