How healthcare is paid for	Compulsory social health insurance (Pflichtversicherung). Employees are insured with the Osterreichische Gesundheitskasse (OGK) automatically through employment; contributions in 2026 are 7.65% of gross pay split 3.87% employee / 3.78% employer, up to a monthly ceiling (Hochstbeitragsgrundlage) of EUR 6,930 (2026). Cover extends to non-earning spouses/partners and children as co-insured. Proof of cover is the e-card, which carries an annual Service-Entgelt (EUR 26.85 for 2027, due 15 November 2026); pensioners, co-insured dependants and marginally employed workers are exempt. At a Vertragsarzt (contract doctor) services are billed directly between doctor and insurer: 'Sie als Patientin/Patient zahlen fur Kassenleistungen in der Kassenordination also nichts.' The main routine patient charges are the Rezeptgebuhr on prescriptions and hospital per-diem contributions. (Urlaubsgesetz §2; Mutterschutzgesetz)
IVF cycles the state covers	The IVF-Fonds pays 70% of the cost of IVF/ICSI, leaving the couple a 30% own share. Four attempts are funded per couple per intended pregnancy; if a treatment produces a documented intact pregnancy, entitlement to four further funded attempts arises. Age limits at the start of an attempt: the woman intended to carry the child must not yet have completed her 40th year, and the male partner (or the female partner of the woman carrying) must not yet have completed his/her 50th year. A qualifying medical indication is required - infertility of tubal origin, endometriosis, PCO syndrome, or male infertility - and other fertility treatment options must have been exhausted. The couple must be married, in a registered partnership or a marriage-like cohabitation, must be Austrian/EU/EEA/Swiss nationals, and at least one partner must have their main residence in Austria. Treatment must be at a contracted centre. (Urlaubsgesetz §2; Mutterschutzgesetz)
Adult dental cover	Adult dental care is partly covered by OGK, not fully. Covered in full at a contract dentist on the e-card: composite (tooth-coloured) fillings in the front and canine teeth, root canal treatment, scaling/tartar removal by the dentist, tooth extractions and oral surgery, and anaesthesia for surgical procedures. Not a contract benefit for adults: professional oral hygiene/cleaning ('Mundhygiene ist in der Regel keine Vertragsleistung fur Erwachsene' - children and teenagers get one session a year), and anaesthesia for routine fillings other than in special cases. Treatment by a non-contract dentist is reimbursed at 80% of the tariff cost, not 80% of the bill. (Urlaubsgesetz §2; Mutterschutzgesetz)
