Caribou Biosciences

Berkeley, CA · founded 2011

Caribou Biosciences is a clinical-stage CRISPR genome-editing biopharmaceutical company in West Berkeley, developing allogeneic (off-the-shelf) CAR-T cell therapies for cancer using its proprietary Cas12a chRDNA editing platform. It was co-founded in 2011 by Rachel Haurwitz (still CEO) and CRISPR pioneer Jennifer Doudna, spun out of UC Berkeley. As a clinical-stage, publicly traded biotech, it carries the usual caveats of the stage: small headcount, revenue that depends on trial readouts and partnerships rather than product sales, and exposure to funding and pipeline risk.
