CircleCI is one of the original cloud CI/CD platforms — it watches your code repo, runs the test/build pipeline in containers or VMs, and ships passing builds onward. Founded in San Francisco in 2011, it grew into a widely-used developer-tools company (a $1.7B valuation as of its 2021 Series F) but now competes hard against GitHub Actions and GitLab, and it is a mature private company rather than a hot startup. Honest caveat: CircleCI disclosed a serious security breach in January 2023 that forced customers to rotate all their secrets, a reputational hit the company worked publicly to recover from.
