San Francisco, CA · founded 2022
Column is a nationally chartered bank rebuilt as a software company: it owns the bank (Column N.A., Member FDIC) and lets developers build financial products directly on it with no middleware or legacy core. Founded by Plaid co-founder William Hockey, it is deliberately tiny, profitable, and 100% founder- and employee-owned. Expect an unusually in-person, high-ownership culture out of the Presidio office (3-4 days/week for most roles) and a hiring bar that leans on async take-homes over endless interviews. Their own words: 'We are a bit of a weird company - not your standard tech or finance company.'
