GitHub

San Francisco, CA · founded 2008

GitHub is the world's largest code-hosting and developer collaboration platform, built on Git. Founded in 2008 and acquired by Microsoft in 2018 for $7.5 billion, it now operates as a Microsoft subsidiary while keeping a remote-first, distributed culture (staff call themselves 'Hubbers'). The benefits are genuinely strong — fully-paid medical/dental/vision premiums, five months of family leave, flexible time off. The honest caveat is cultural: since the Microsoft acquisition, employee reviews increasingly describe an erosion of GitHub's independent identity, weak middle management, and reorg churn.
