Promoted from withinAfter probation, firefighters can move into Fire Inspector, USAR, Swift Water, Dispatcher, Helicopter Pilot, Arson Investigator, Scuba Diver and Medic Bike Patrol assignments.
PensionLAFPP Tier 6 defined-benefit pension (all sworn hired since 1 July 2011). 40% of final average salary at 20 years of service, rising to a maximum of 90% at 33 years; eligible to retire at age 50 with 20 years. Members contribute 11% of pre-tax pay and do NOT earn Social Security credit.
RetentionDocumented occupational risk. NIOSH (US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) reports that cancer is a leading cause of death among firefighters, and that sudden death from a heart event is the most common cause of death among firefighters.
