| How healthcare is paid for | Basic medical insurance covers about 95% of the population, over 1.32 billion people in 2024, through two schemes of markedly different generosity. Urban Employee insurance, which a salaried worker is on, reimburses roughly 84.6% of in-directory inpatient costs. Urban and Rural Resident insurance reimburses about 68.1%, and out-of-pocket spending for those enrollees remains around 45% of their total health expenditure.
