Modal

New York, NY

Modal builds cloud infrastructure for AI, data and ML teams — a serverless platform that lets developers spin up from zero to thousands of CPUs or GPUs with usage-based pricing, so they can ship inference, fine-tuning, biotech and media workloads without managing servers. It was co-founded by Erik Bernhardsson (creator of Spotify's Luigi and the Annoy library) and Akshat Bubna, and the team skews heavily technical, including creators of well-known open-source projects (Seaborn, Luigi), academics and olympiad medalists. Honest caveats: it is a small, infrastructure-first startup that is office-based and publishes essentially nothing about its benefits, so the benefits side of this record is thin by necessity rather than by choice.
