OpenTable

San Francisco, CA · founded 1998

OpenTable is the online restaurant-reservation marketplace: diners book tables for free, restaurants pay subscription and per-cover fees. Founded in San Francisco in 1998, it IPO'd in 2009 and was acquired by Booking Holdings in 2014 for $2.6 billion, so it now operates as a mature subsidiary of a large publicly traded travel conglomerate rather than an independent startup. It reports seating over a billion diners a year across 55,000+ restaurants in 80+ countries. Work is hybrid (about two days a week) out of a downtown SF office near the Embarcadero, and the benefits list leans wellness-heavy (company-paid therapy and Headspace, an annual company-wide recharge week). Honest caveats: much of the org is restaurant-facing sales, headcount is modest for its brand recognition, and being inside Booking Holdings means big-company process rather than startup upside.
