Plaid

San Francisco, CA · founded 2013

Plaid is the fintech infrastructure company whose API connects consumer apps like Venmo and Chime to users' bank accounts, so most people use it without knowing the name. Founded in 2013 by Zach Perret and William Hockey, it pivoted early from building its own consumer finance product to selling the plumbing, and it survived a blocked $5.3B Visa acquisition in 2020 to become an independent, roughly $8B-valued company. The culture the company projects is autonomy-heavy, high-impact engineering work across offices in San Francisco, New York and Raleigh-Durham. Honest caveats: it is a data-access business that settled a $58M privacy class action in 2021, and as a still-private late-stage company, equity outcomes depend on an eventual liquidity event.
