| How healthcare is paid for | Tax-funded through Health New Zealand. Public hospital treatment including inpatient stays and specialist care is free to eligible people. Primary care is NOT free: GP visits are subsidised but carry a co-payment, and prescriptions carry a charge. Eligibility is what foreign workers get wrong, because it is not automatic on arrival: publicly funded services reach citizens and permanent residents, and WORK VISA holders whose visa is valid for TWO YEARS OR MORE. A worker on a shorter visa pays the full cost of all care including hospital treatment. ACC no-fault cover for accidental injury applies to everyone including visitors, separately from this test. | IVF cycles the state covers | Rationed by score rather than entitlement. Access is decided by the Clinical Priority Assessment Criteria, scored out of 100, with at least 65 points required. Eligible couples get up to TWO publicly funded cycles. Standard criteria include the woman being under 40, BMI under 32, non-smoking, and meeting residency requirements, so a worker on a short visa is excluded before the clinical scoring begins. Waits run roughly 6 to 18 months by region. (Holidays Act 2003) |
| Cost to see a doctor | Not free. A standard GP consultation for an enrolled adult typically costs NZD 19 to 60 in 2026, and after-hours clinics commonly NZD 75 or more. Visits for children under 14 are generally free or heavily subsidised, and Community Services Card holders pay reduced charges. (Holidays Act 2003) |
