How healthcare is paid forProvincial single-payer medicare funded from taxation. Medically necessary hospital and physician services are free at the point of use with no user charge, but each province runs its own plan and card. What medicare does NOT cover surprises newcomers: prescription drugs taken outside hospital, dental, vision, chiropractic and ambulance are all outside the public plan, funded only for targeted groups and differing province by province. That is why employer extended-health and dental cover is a substantive part of Canadian pay rather than a nicety. (Canada Labour Code Part III)
