Scribe Therapeutics is a clinical-stage CRISPR biotech in Alameda, spun out of the UC Berkeley labs of CRISPR pioneers and co-founded by Nobel laureate Jennifer Doudna alongside CEO Benjamin Oakes, David Savage and Brett Staahl. Rather than use off-the-shelf CRISPR, it engineers its own CasX-derived 'X-Editor' enzymes ('CRISPR by Design') and is aiming them at cardiometabolic disease — its lead candidate STX-1150 epigenetically silences PCSK9 to lower LDL-C, and it has in-vivo partnerships with Eli Lilly and Sanofi. Honest caveats: this is a small (LinkedIn lists 51-200 employees), science-heavy, clinical-stage company with no approved products, funded by partnership milestones, venture capital and grants (e.g. a $25M+ CIRM award in 2026), so it carries the binary risk and funding dependence of an early gene-editing startup. It also publishes nothing about pay, benefits or day-to-day culture, and its own careers job board is currently broken — so prospective hires get almost no public signal on what working there is actually like.
