Stripe is famous for two things that are both true: an extraordinarily high talent bar and a deep writing culture — decisions and thinking happen in careful docs, everyone (not just support) is expected to talk to users, and the craft standard is real. The people are the main draw, comp is strong, and if you love rigorous, ambitious engineering it can be the best work of your life. The cost is intensity: work-life balance and management both score around 3.0, pressure and after-hours demands run high, and reviewers describe burnout that even good pay doesn't fully offset. It's not the Kalanick kind of toxic — it's the 'move with urgency, bar is very high' kind — and a 2022 round cut roughly 14% of staff, so it isn't layoff-proof either. Great for a driven builder who thrives on writing and high standards; harder if you need predictable hours or a lot of managerial hand-holding.
