U.S. Bancorp

Minneapolis, MN · founded 1863

U.S. Bancorp (which operates as U.S. Bank) is one of the largest banks in the United States, headquartered in downtown Minneapolis and tracing its charter back to 1863. It is a big, traditional, heavily regulated financial institution of roughly 70,000 people, so the experience varies enormously by division — retail branches, corporate and commercial banking, wealth management, and the Elavon payments business all feel quite different. On benefits it is unusually strong for the sector: a 100%-up-to-4% 401(k) match with immediate vesting AND a company-funded cash-balance pension, 10 weeks of paid parental leave for all parents (19 for the birthing parent), $10,000 adoption/surrogacy help, and an HSA the bank contributes to. The honest caveat is that it is a legacy bank, not a tech company — hierarchical, process-heavy, and pay/culture depend a lot on which line of business and manager you land under.
