| How healthcare is paid for | Spain's Sistema Nacional de Salud is funded from general taxation and run by the 17 autonomous communities. Anyone insured under the Seguridad Social (and their beneficiaries) gets a tarjeta sanitaria and receives GP, specialist, emergency, hospital and rehabilitation care in the public network at no charge. The only routine patient charge is a percentage co-payment on outpatient prescription medicines (10%-60% of price, by income and pensioner status). Dental prostheses and glasses are excluded from cover. (Estatuto de los Trabajadores art. 38) |
| IVF cycles the state covers | Public funding under the SNS common services portfolio is capped at three IVF/ICSI cycles with ovarian stimulation (with own or donated sperm, or three cycles with donated oocytes); the limit may be reduced on prognosis. Access conditions: the woman must be over 18 and under 40 (man over 18 and under 55) at the start of the infertility work-up, and there must be no previous living healthy child - for couples, no healthy child in common. Artificial insemination is funded for up to four cycles with partner sperm (woman under 38) or six cycles with donor sperm (woman under 40). Prior voluntary sterilisation is an exclusion. Some autonomous communities fund beyond this national floor. (Estatuto de los Trabajadores art. 38) |
