Unity Technologies

San Francisco, CA · founded 2004

Unity makes the game engine behind roughly half of all mobile games and much of the AR/VR market; it is a public company (NYSE: U) headquartered in San Francisco. Working here in 2026 means joining a company still recovering from a rough stretch: the September 2023 'Runtime Fee' announcement charging developers per install triggered fierce industry backlash and even office-closing threats, CEO John Riccitiello departed weeks later, and the company cut staff repeatedly, including about 1,800 roles (25% of the workforce) in January 2024, then unwound big acquisitions like Weta and ironSource. The upside is a genuinely influential product and a stated culture built on four principles (lead with empathy and respect, communicate with candor, act with urgency, prioritize the greater good). The caveat is instability: if you value a steady, low-drama employer, weigh the recent leadership churn, layoffs, and strategic resets carefully, and ask your team directly how the reorg landed for them.
