VMware pioneered x86 virtualization and became the default way enterprises ran their data centers, spanning server, cloud, networking and security software. In November 2023 Broadcom closed its ~$69B acquisition and reorganized VMware into Broadcom divisions, cutting over 2,800 roles and selling the End-User Computing business (now Omnissa, owned by KKR). The honest caveat: this is no longer an independent company. Broadcom is known for aggressive post-acquisition cost discipline, licensing overhauls, and thinning perks, so the generous pre-acquisition benefits VMware was known for should be treated as uncertain today.
